Episode 13
Gerty MacDowell deems Bloom a fittingly appreciative candidate for a flash
of her attributes. As she leans back to watch the fireworks display in the
sky over the Church of Mary Star of the Sea, she offers him a beguiling
glimpse of her ankles, to which Bloom promptly responds with a pleasurable
masturbatory interlude. The time is 8:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Joyce started writing Episode 13 in the Autumn of 1919 in
Zurich and he finished it in Trieste in 1920. It was published in The Little
Review in April 1920.
At some point since 1904, the Strand has been reclaimed and built on, making
it difficult to locate precisely the scene of this episode. However, we
did manage to photograph a location which is as near as we could get to
the original location.
