Episode 12
We are in Barney Kiernan’s pub where the punters are under the mistaken impression that Bloom has won money on a horse called Throwaway and that he is stingily refusing to stand a celebratory round of drinks. A citizen gets really worked about this assumption and Bloom wags a cigar in his face, whereupon the chauvinist citizen throws a biscuit tin at Bloom. The latter escapes by jumping on a jaunting car. The time is 04.45 – 5.45 p.m.

The location of Barney Kiernan’s pub is erroneously thought to be where the current pub stands on the corner of the street. In fact Barney Kiernan’s pub was where the hairdresser’s shop now is at number 9 and was spread over numbers 8-10.

Episode 12 was written in Zurich. It was published in The Little Review in November and December 1919 and in January and March 1920.
