Episode 10
We find Bloom selecting a book called Sweets of Sin for Molly. Simultaneously,
at the front gate of Trinity College, Stephen is in conversation with Almidano
Antiphonic, a professor of singing, who is advising him against abandoning
his singing career.
The time is 02.55 - 4:00 p.m.
It would appear that Joyce deliberately wants to mystify us as to Bloom’s
exact whereabouts in this episode. It is unclear at which shop Bloom finds
Sweets of Sin, but it is probably in the vicinity of the corner of Merchant’s
Arch and Temple Bar. He may have browsed through books on a hawker’s cart,
or he may have given his custom to Francis Fitzgerald’s shop located at
1 Merchant’s Arch/15 Temple Bar. In any case, for the purposes of this project,
we have opted for a location in Merchant’s Arch.
Episode 10 was written in Zurich at the end of 1918 and
completed in February 1919. It was published in The Little Review in June
and July 1919.
