Episode 1.
The first episode is set in the Martello Tower on a headland at Sandycove.
The tower was built by the British at the start of the 19th century to forestall
a possible French invasion.
In this first episode, Stephen Dedalus, a 22 year-old poet and part-time
teacher, and Buck Mulligan, a medical student, are the tower’s 2 tenants.
Buck Mulligan is shaving on the gun platform at the top of the tower and
mocking the ritual of the Roman Catholic Mass. The time is 8:00 a.m.
Episode 1 was finished in Zurich, november 1917 and published in The Little Review on march 1918. Today this tower is preserved as the James Joyce Museum and was officially opened on Bloomsday 1962 by Silvia Beach, the publisher of Ulysses,
