Episode 2.
This episode takes place entirely at the Summerfield Lodge School in
Dalkey, a small town southeast of the Martello Tower. Stephen is
teaching maths, history and English to a class of boys . After class, he
receives his month’s pay from the school’s proprietor, Mr. Deasy. The

Joyce wrote much of this episode in Locarno, 1917, having been forced by wartime conditions to leave Trieste with his family. Episode 2 was finished in Zurich, december 1917 and published in The Little Review, april 1918.
