From ‘Free Spirits’ by R. Martakies:
"Harry Pierce, who donated the Merzbarn wall to the Hatton Gallery in 1965, died the following year.
By then he had crossed swords many times with Edith Thomas and there was much bad feeling between the pair. He refused to consult with her over the matter if the maintenance of the barn and concealed the fact that he had authorised its removal to Newcastle until work was well underway.
Edith was dismayed by the news. She had so much wanted the wall to be preserved on the site within the barn at Elterwater, in memory of Schwitters. But Pierce stuck to his decision, the barn wall was removed and, over the years, the beautiful Cylinders estate reverted to nature."
